GC Sensex crashes to all time low!!!

Today was the worst day ever for GC guys, "the self proclaimed intellectuals" of IIFT. But education and intelligence does not go the same way when it comes to Business Communication.

Today there was a Business Communication class by Father AC Jesurajan in IIFT Kolkata campus for MBA- IB 07-09 batch. As usual GC guys were unprepared as they were overconfident that they will deliver on the spot. Worst come to fore when the senior most member of GC Mr. Prabhnoor came to daiz. As usual he got lost into what he wanted to say and whole presentation looked like he was discussing three successful ladies. Ankur Agarwal started the proceedings for GC. Lack of preparation was totally evident from the way he delivered his speech. A casual dressing in formal style spoke tons about him. A tie that didn’t have a collar to support and a collar of a shirt that flew out in air. It was like he was speaking just for the sake of doing it.

Next came Abrar, one of the pillars of GC. Much was expected from him but in the end whole show was a complete fiasco. Looked like he was pleading his younger brother to take his advice otherwise father will kill him. He forgot the essence and played the trumpet that was as if a novice is doing it and parents have to guide him to stop.

Praddy, what a smiling face he has got. Looked at father in the hope that he will empathize with his speech terribily looking for a support for father to tell him, “Stop your crap”, father obliged but not before the show became an embarrassment. He had to hide his face behind his laptop and run away from the podium.

Then came the chocolate boy, Mohit. As soon as he started to speak a general consensus was, this guy is better off having chocolates. As if loud speakers at durga pooja are not enough, he is a bigger torture.

Jignis or Jigi bhai did oblige the podium, by speaking few concrete sentences but gave a good enough dose for the audience and Father to sleep happily.

P2P, Rishabh could not live up to his name and be precise. People thought that he was better of racing on laptop rather than trying to race on the podium where he lost his way and seemed as if he was walking in unfamiliar streets of Mumbai, looking for sympathy from audience and father to let him go.

The highlight of the show was jwala(Rahul B haradwaj), it seemed as if it was a dormant volcano. Tried to start impressively but forgot the points which he had tried to memorize. After that it was a tamil, treat for a hindi loving audience. Something that the audience could hardly make of and waited for the ordeal to end.

GC guys wake up!!! U ve got a long way ahead!!

Dump TV, Pick up books... What crap???

Dear Brother, You seem to be having a good time watching the 20-20 cricket world cup. And you must be enjoying every bit of the fun. But do you think that the time you spend watching cricket is going to help you in any way? Or for that matter the wrestling matches whose results you can predict yourself, thanks to your indepth knowledge about them. But is this knowledge going to help you in any way?

What is shown in TV is not the real world. Do u want people to notice you on TV or u want to be an audience your entire life. Don’t you aspire to appear on NDTV or AAJTAK for that matter. Imagine interviewers running behind you seeking your opinion while the entire world watches you on TV. This will not only make you and me proud but you also make our parents proud. My brother, let me make this clear the path for appearing on TV is not through watching more TV.
TV kills creativity, makes you very passive, it is only aimed more at entertainment and less at gaining knowledge.

These are the building years of your life and the things what you do at this stage will eventually shape your values and thus your future.

If you want to become a Bill Gates or a Dhirubhai Ambani, you need to get inspired from their real life stories. And how do you do that? Read about them. Read about how they made it big. The point I am trying to convey here is that you need to make books your best friends. Start inculcating the habit of reading and make it a pleasurable habit. Reading is not just about reading your course books, which might sound boring to you. There is a whole new world to be explored.

A book teaches you self -discipline. It helps u focus on a particular task. Not everything in life can be learned through self experience. Learn from the experiences of others. Read their books.

Do you have any plans of what u wish to do in your life ahead? How do u want to be identified in the society? What do u wish to become? A doctor, an engineer? A pilot? Remember one thing, these courses help you identify a stream/field in life. But to excel in that field, to beat the best, to be one step ahead of the race, you need to have extra skills in you. You need to manage yourself and your life in the best possible way with the limited resources available. And a Management Course teaches you that. Who leads the biggest companies in India? And what do these big honchos have in common? An MBA degree.

So my dear brother, focus your energies on this goal, to get into the best management institutes of this country. And effective reading is a powerful tool in achieving this goal. Use your time judiciously as time once passed, cannot be recovered back.

Father of Communication Vs Mother of Statistics

Never before during the entire first trimester has the class been so divided as to what needs immediate attention? It’s the clash of two forms of Businesses. “Business Communication” and “Business Statistics”.
On one side you have a 40% weightage for the Statistics end term but the Father’s terror is so deeply embedded into our hearts that the mind is blocked to think anything beyond. For the layman trying to comprehend what these subjects are all about, Business Communication teaches you how to attend a “business dinner” and still be hungry and Business Statistics tells you how to “normally distribute” your bill among starters, main course and the dessert.
As I burn the midnight oil trying to find a middle way to keep both my "parents" happy, the rest of India sleeps happily after a fun-filled Sunday.

As SUMMERS approach, the race gets HOTTER

If there could be a bigger hoax than NASA taking man to the moon, it was today, the 15th September 2007. 53 smart management students, who are going to hold high positions in the industry in days to come, were taken for the biggest ride of their lives. What more can raise higher expectations than getting ITC to the campus for summer internships.

As the best minds of India increased the number of hits at the ITC website, an estimated 236 man hours of Indian intellectual capital went down the drain deciding if it was a real summer’s process or a mock one. As the time drew closer for the real test, the stakes increased with still no consensus on where we were headed. As I write this blog, I am still unsure about the reality but with my performance at the GD, I have joined the lobby of the Mock supportersJ.

One thing which came out clearly was the heat which is going to build up at Delhi in the days to come. The experience today gave a good idea of the excitement and tension which shall engulf our batch in the Summers process.
As for now, its time to reflect, strategise and prepare for the challenge ahead.
Mission Summers has begun!!!

The Great Marketing Mix(up)!!!!!

I had heard from my brother and cousins about Kotler being the great marketing guru, but little did I know that he would be there in my life so soon and in such a large way (the buk is around 710 odd pages n weighs around 2 kilos!!!!). Anyways if life gives it, u have to take it, and that we did....... With the monstrous book to cover and less than 12 hrs of total study time to devote (u see there r so many things to do like playing NFS and motoGP, chatting with friends at other places, orkutting.......u just dont get enough time to study) need arousal and problem recognition stage had already come and gone. Now the information search was on for alternatives. The different ideas that crossed the mind at that time ranged from studying the entire book in a continuous stretch of 10-12 hours to committing suicide(yes!! even that idea crossed my mind for a fleeting second, with having done nothing a day before the exam). At this stage of information search one of my friends pinged me (personal information source) and it struck me to ask him for ppts. (which he immediately sent, a friend in need is a friend indeed!!!!). On evaluating the alternatives, I found that both the extremes would have been equally challenging. However, I decided to settle for much less. Now that a (purchase) decision had been, I was struck with the famous J.K. dilemma of GC (which slide to do first and which ones to leave for the next day). Consequently, time flew as quickly as it does when our Jiggy bhai sits with his laptop using the 'softwares'(u see he's never satisfied and complains about shortage of time). There I was with less than one hour to go and 3 chapters remaining and then it came to my mind that I had also made class notes (which were quite better than the photocopied ones that the others are reading). So out came the IIFT's notepad with all my golden work in it and the 3 chapters just went smoothly. Finally, the hour of reckoning arrived and I entered the hall on the 8th floor. But wait is there an exam for the faculty as well??? (the entire IIFT faculty was there for invigilation). After another round of JK dilemma regarding my seat, I finally settled. The 2 hours that followed, witnessed me assuming the role of a student (Questions 1 and 4), an advisor(question3), an analyst(Q5) and a sales head (who puts his boss, Mr. Arijit Sen, into the JK dilemma with the weird yet innovative marketing solutions). After much fight the exam finally came to an end.
Don't know much, but only wish that our beloved professor stays healthy after reading the answer scripts. As for Mr. Kotler, its goodbye to him as the new theories of marketing management have finally emerged ( courtesy me!!!!)

Believe in yourself

Ek din mit jaayega mati ke mol,
Jag mein reh jaayenge pyaare tere bol.
So real and true, the jist is you should achieve in life but not at the cost of your identity.
A true statement that is so difficult to achieve in today's corporate lifestyle.
A job where your identity is dependent on your boss.
How he perceives you and projects you.
A success based on your senior’s happiness?
Is that really what we can define as success?
If so where's your identity?
Your thought process?
Somewhere based on how your boss thinks or perceives how things are.
What a mockery!
In an industry driven by human perception being an idealist and having an independent thought process might be a hindrance for you in short run but will certainly be fruitful in long run.
If you are capable enough and believe in yourself a day will come when you will be remembered for maintaining your identity, doing your work sincerely and growing without compromising on your ethics.
You might not be a hero for everyone to emulate but will have your dignified existence.
You will never be in a position where you will crib because you were never an artificial person.
You were what you are and achieved what you deserve.
Spiritual happiness is what a person can relish as his wealth forever.
So striving for this should be our aim and what we will achieve on way will certainly be something that will inspire many more to follow the same path.

Celebrating Universal Brotherhood

As the first day of the holy month of Ramadan passes by, I take this opportunity to put forward the message which this month brings for the entire Humanity.
Fasting it is not just abstaining from food, but abstaining from all forms of evil, both of the body and the soul. It teaches man a creative sense of hope, devotion, patience, willpower, discipline, spirit of social belonging, unity and brotherhood. The month of Ramadhan serves as a remainder to the faithful that it is important to set aside special time to reflect and share, a time for atonement and forgiveness that contribute to greater Harmony among individuals and Peaceful co-existence among Communities.
So on the onset of this auspicious month I greet you ALL with PEACE and BLESSINGS; and let each one of us strive to make this beautiful EARTH a more peaceful place to live in and lets follow the message of UNIVERSAL BROTHERHOOD in letter and spirit.
Together WE CAN and WE WILL make a DIFFERENCE.

A personal one

Ideally this was supposed to on my blog but as instructed by Blog coordinator to use this blog for personal posts as well, here it goes

Today was a dejecting as well as a joyful day at GC,
We all were happy to have the first feel of Mr.Kotler,
Seriously a first earnest effort for group studies at GC.
A commitment governed by circumstancesJ.
In the end it ended up well.
Dejecting in the sense I encountered my first fight at GC, and with a person whom I couldn’t have imagined in the wildest of my dreams. What started with a light hearted humour turned out to be a sadist affair. But a learning that would go a long way in improving me.
As IIFT has its way, its contributing in a long way to enable us become good managers. The adversities on and off the campus are teaching a lot of things. I feel it’s the same way for whole of GC and IIFT Kol 07-09.
Feel so happy at the end of the day we have this blog to share, talk and write about.
And as always GC we rock and let’s rock IIFT Kol. Way to go!

A day to remember

A day of reckoning has finally arrived at GC 100. After spending the complete day in the streets of Kolkata, folks have arrived back, tired but with high spirits of having done well in their field job for NMS. On this historic day we have the distinguished presence of FOA(Father of Accounting – Gaurav Dhanani)
Today we have a complete night and a challenge to complete the thickest book of our syllabi.
Will it be the 4 P’s of marketing or the 4 L’s of GC i.e. Laziness, Laxity, Luxury and Laughter that will prevail over?
Only time will tell but it will be a challenge unforeseen and a learning for the days ahead at IIFT, Kolkata.
GC - Let’s rock once again

Praddy: Indomitable spirit of GC

What is there in name? Very rightly said Mr. Shakespeare. You cannot say much about the person just by hearing his name. Finest example of this is the most notorious and jovial chap of our GC block. You might have surmised by now whom I am talking about. He is none but Pradeep Kumar. How this name sounds to you? It gives an image of a mature guy from far flung village. But here it is the opposite. He is the youngest and most energetic person I have ever seen. When he is not around it seems that life in GC has come to stand still. That is why his name has been rechristened to PRADDY. That's what suit his personality. But he has an hidden aspect of his life which very few people know. He is a very emotional chap so as to say. When we sit together over a bottle of bear, his innner personality comes to fore. When it comes to study he is most studious among all of us. Another aspect of his personality is his weakness for girls. He cannot see any woman in trouble. He is already the heart throb of many girls in Kolkata...Recently he is in the phase of growing his hairs...curly ones...you will very soon see him in new avataar... Great going praddy..Keep up your cheerful and indomitable spirit...:)

Accounts “An Asset or Liability”

11th September 2009: As the world mourns the 6th Anniversary of the attack on the world Trade Centre, an equally important battle has just been won. The end term paper of Accounting has finally been conquered. As the warlords return with the spoils of war(the question papers), there was one question which looked the easiest to answer but was infact the toughest to crack. It simply said “What is the significance of the Accounts course”. As I started to think what I had accomplished in all those accounts classes I attended, the answer seemed to be coming slowly. I thought again and again and then I realised that this was the faculty’s way of making me realise that I had hardly done anything worthwhile in the 60 odd precious hours I spent in the accounts class. But the warning came just a bit late and by the time I could get serious with it, the bell rang, the paper was taken away and the accounts test was finally over. So what was the Accounts course? An asset or liability? Who cares now. We have already closed the balance sheet :)

The eccentric Abrar

Prabhnoor Bhai " I never came here to study but to do somethin different, donno why ppl are treating this as another engineering course?" This guy is a passionate reader and writer. Called Akbaar by Praddy, this guy is somethin different. God knows when he studies makes it a point to be up to date with everything including studies. He's busy with his paper writings and newspapers. Guys he's learning the tricks of the trade faster than anyone else.
A fan of Sunil bhai whom he's often associated with.
This guy is somethin different.
Well he's done quite a lot of photo sessions on me.
Keep rocking and continue your chilled out approach.

Spirit of Jwala rocks GC

Jwala as described by Praddy and followed by all, after cracking the inugral paper of IIFT,Kolkata 2007-09 scoring out of marks for the first time since 10+2(self proclaimed).
He is rocking GC with his bakchodi, long sessions on phone with bhabhi, another session thinking caps, comments are invited :).
A newly developed passion for CAT or someone else(??????), am I correct?
Bhai double cross at first step chill he's just acting as an experienced mentor.
This dude rocks with a massive spirit displayed at freshers where we got worried what if he drinks one more, how will we carry our hot jwala back home.
He's a passionate eater and a better sleeper, always ready to get up and start his bakchodi. A model for all who complain that studies can't be done after 3 years of job, this guy can teach u all and be modest enough to accept nothing. A gud friend and one who fags around in GC with his smile and spirit intact.

The Journey Begins

This blog is dedicated to 8 eccentric guys who have hardly anything in common other than the fact that each of them has cracked the IIFT exam and has come to this coveted institution to pursue their dreams. As they chase their dreams, this blog will capture their fun filled journey. Expect some "spilling the beans" as some glaring revelations might just be on their way.As the 8 of them get trapped in a prisonners dilemma trying to expose each other to the maximum, all one can expect is hillarious fun. As the stakes get higher, the updates shall become more interesting.
Welcome on board all and keep checking this space for the adventure ahead.
